What are scammers?

Scammers are individuals that attempt to steal your finances from you using deception, most commonly pretending to be salesmen who are trying to offer you a service in exchange for money. Once receiving the money, scammers will neglect to complete the service that they have offered. They often begin their scams by "cold-calling", which means to approach you uninvited (either by knocking on your door or calling your phone) to offer you services you have not asked for.

What CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF?

Don't deal with cold callers. Instead, find local traders that have been vetted by the Trading Standards at https://approvedtrader.scot/
Close the door on uninvited callers offering services. Don't feel obliged to answer them, and don't let them in if you feel uncomfortable.
Report suspicious cold-callers to Police Scotland using 101 to protect the rest of your community and ensure that they don't reach someone vulnerable.

If an uninvited trader knocks on your door and tells you that urgent work needs to be done, don't take them at their work, and get a second opinion from a trusted source.
Do your research. Get at least three quotes before having any work carried out to ensure that they are consistent and to find a trader that you can trust.
Cold-callers are smart, and use tricks such as uniforms, glossy leaflets and liveried vans. Don't believe them at first glance, and don't agree to a deal on the spot.
